Used Machinery - What to look out for...
CHECK THE ENGINE
Start the tractor and see if the engine is spluttering. Make sure its not blowing oil or unburned fuel out of the exhaust. Black smoke out of a diesel on start up is ok, but if it doesn't clear or if it's any other colour then there is likely to be an engine problem. Check the o-rings on the crank shaft
CHECK THE GEARS
Get on the tractor and drive it to check the gears. When the tractor is moving, apply the brakes to check that the differential locks are working. Make sure it doesn't jump out of gear too.
CHECK THE PTO
Make sure the tractor PTO is working and will turn on and off.
CHECK THE HYDRAULIC LIFT
The hydraulic lift may work by going up and down, but you may only discover problems when you've put a load on it.
CHECK THE STEERING
Move the steering wheel back and forth with some force and make sure it feels right. While driving make sure you check the differential locks work when turning corners.
CHECK THE OVERALL LOOKS
Look out for wear and tear, tyre and pedal wear should correspond with tractor hours. Look at wear around foot pedals, mats and around the steering wheel. If tyre treads are worn down to half their original tread depth then not all the tractor power may be transferred to the ground.
See if the paintwork has been re-touched, this may indicate fire or flood damage. Look out for replaced seals and rubbers around the cab, engine rear diff, again this may indicate fire or flood damage.
Damaged cables and defective lights can indicate that the tractor has been treated roughly.
Check to see that the original serial number is still on the machine.
Check the battery, look out for low water level, green deposits on the pole or a moist layer of dirt on the top.
CHECK FOR LEAKS
Streaks of oil across the tyres and hubs may mean a defective shaft seal, check the hydraulics for leaks too.
