Are you in a Nitrate Vulnerable Zone??
Information Regarding Nitrate Vulnerable Zones and the support available to farmers to meet regulations.
A Nitrate Vulnerable Zone (NVZ) is an area of land draining into ground or surface waters that are currently high in nitrate, or can become so. THe NVZs in Wales and England were updated in 2008.
The Nitrate Directive (Wales) requires the identification of nitrate polluted waters using the following criteria:
Surface freshwaters which contain or could contain nitrate concentrations greater than 50 milligrammes per litre (mg/l)
Groundwaters which contain or could contain nitrate concentrations greater than 50mg/l.
Natural freshwater lakes or other bodies, estuaries, coastel and marine waters which are eutrophic or may become eutrophic. Eutrophication is where excess nutrients can result in an undesirable disturbance of the aquatic ecosystem.
See the picture below for a rough guide of NVZ areas currently enforced in Wales.

NVZs currently in use in England are listed below, for a full map of NVZs in England please visit the DEFRA or Environment Agency websites.

The Catchment Sensitive Farming Scheme (CSF) is available to all farmers in wales who are in a Nitrate Vulnerable Zone, these grants are aimed at works that reduce pollution risks e.g. accurate slurry usage, work to separate clean and dirty water etc.
Applications for grant aid can be made at 40% of costs up to a maximum of £30,000 per holding or 50% of costs up to a maximum of £37,500 per holding for young farmers.
Once the latest informational booklet regarding 2010 CSF scheme have been released we will update this page to provide you with the latest info.
